This tonic wine is elsewhere marketed with the tag line: 'Apéritif au Malaga Vieux'. Most likely, the scene takes place on a Mediterranean beach in Malaga, Spain. The young servant is not only a romanticized representation of the Moorish history of the locale, but perhaps also a reflection of the slave trade that took place in the same port. And though referencing a more exotic land, this liqueur was actually marketed and made in France.
